Sensei Karl Anastasi
I started training Shotokan Karate at the age of eighteen and from the first day till now I have kept the same enthusiasm that I had when starting a session whether teaching or training.
I started training in 1999 under the tuition of Sensei Anthony Zammit, currently 6th Dan, who is the only recognised W.K.F referee in Malta and also one of the most talented, passionate and knowledgeable persons within the History of Karate in Malta.
In the years to follow since 1999, I diligently graded through the kyu levels under Sensei Anthony Zammit reaching my 1st Dan grading in November 2003. As 1st Dan is only the beginning of a Karateka’s career, my personal training and the passion to teach continued to grow and evolve. After three years of intense training and preparation I achieved the rank of 2nd Dan Black Belt in October 2006. My passion for karate and the achievement of results through the students I was teaching had and will always have an amazing feeling. The true karate instructor will always want his students to excel in karate, on a technical level or on a personal level. There are many reasons that bring people to the Dojo to train and each one of those reasons carries a great deal of value! Training never stops as there is always something new to learn or a new rank to achieve. After another 4 years since my last grading I was ready for the hardest test since 1999 – this was my 3rd Dan grading. After a few disappointments and hardships I achieved the rank of 3rd Dan Black Belt in May 2011. Like I always tell my students, when the time is right and you have trained enough you will be ready for your next grade. With my marriage to my wife, Roberta, and the birth of our child, Elise, and after 6 years I attended my 4th Dan grading very confident with a whole lot more experience “under my belt”. I have learnt a great deal about myself, on all levels, with the undivided assistance of Sensei Zammit, to whom today I owe a great deal of gratitude.
Gichin Funakoshi once said that “The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants.”
